Grote veranderingen in Apple’s managementteam: Hoofd retail en iOS eruit

Apple heeft vandaag aangekondigd dat het hoofd van de retail stores John Browett niet langer deel uit maakt en er naar een opvolger wordt gezocht. Opvallender is dat ook Scott Forstall onderweg naar buiten is, zijn rol als voormalig leider van het iOS team is voorbij en tot zijn daadwerkelijk vertrek in 2013 mag hij Tim Cook nog van adviezen voorzien.

Deze twee aanpassingen in het team komen niet echt als een enorme verassing maar zijn alsnog opvallend. De twee mensen die vandaag vervangen zijn waren namelijk verantwoordelijk voor twee van de belangrijkste onderdelen die door de meeste consumenten gezien worden; iOS en de Apple Stores.

John Browett – Apple Retail

John Brownett begon zijn nieuwe rol bij Apple meteen al met een miskleun door een flinke bezuiniging/ontslag ronde door te voeren om die vervolgens binnen no time weer terug te (moeten) draaien. Daarmee leek hij ook meteen al zijn krediet verspeeld te hebben.

Uit onderstaande persbericht blijkt dat Brownett al geen rol meer heeft en dat Apple nu op zoek is naar geschikte vervanging. In de tussentijd zal het retail team direct aan Tim Cook rapporteren.

Scott Forstall – iOS

Er gaan al weken geruchten over Scott Forstall en hoe hij door zijn enorme drang naar succes en zijn neiging om met andermans werkt de eer op te strijken het respect van de rest van Apple’s managementteam was verloren. Forstall schijnt een nogal duidelijk mening te hebben en maakte er geen geheim van zijn ambitie om uiteindelijk als het hoofd van Apple te willen fungeren. Dit resulteerde echter in zoveel spanningen dat Forstall door zo’n beetje iedereen gemeden werd en er was zelfs sprake van dat Bob Mansfield juist om die reden zijn vertrek aankondigde (ondertussen is hij terug, en belangrijker dan ooit). Als er iemand was die dezelfde ambitie (en crazy stare) als Steve Jobs leek te hebben binnen Apple’s huidige managementteam dan was het Forstall wel. Maar zoals het zich nu doet aanzien lijkt de rest van Apple niet van plan te zijn om met Forstall’s negatievere eigenschappen om te gaan in ruil voor zijn leiding en visie, want hoe graag Forstall ook zou willen is hij toch echt geen Steve Jobs.

Forstall forgot he was Steve’s guy, not Steve Jobs. 

Maar de minder dan succesvolle lancering van zowel Siri en Apple Maps kan misschien ook wel als belangrijkste factor in deze beslissing worden uitgelegd.

UPDATE: Volgens de Wall Street Journal was het weigeren van Forstall om de excuusbrief die Apple na de lancering van Apple Maps zijn haar site publiceerde te ondertekenen de spreekwoordelijke druppel die de emmer deed overlopen.

Graig Federighi neemt Forstalls verantwoordelijkheden deels over, aangevuld met hulp van Ive en Cue. Dat nu het hoofd van OS X ook aan het hoofd van iOS staat kan natuurlijk teken opgevat worden dat er nog meer overlap/samenvoeging van beiden besturingssystemen gaat komen in de toekomst.

Additionally, John Browett is leaving Apple. A search for a new head of Retail is underway and in the interim, the Retail team will report directly to Tim Cook.
